VMware VM's will not reboot

Issue

  • Normal reboot commands issued either from VMware or from the OS causes the VM goes to a black screen with a single gray cursor which just blinks forever and the system will never actually reboot.

  • This problem happens randomly but frequently.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1
