Why do I see "sshd: no hostkeys available" in journal log?

Issue

  • When enable ssh protocol version 1, sshd.service is not able to start.
-- Unit sshd.service has begun starting up.
Dec 01 14:04:38 desktop.example.com sshd[19794]: Disabling protocol version 1. Could not load host key
Dec 01 14:04:38 desktop.example.com  sshd[19794]: sshd: no hostkeys available -- exiting.
Dec 01 14:04:38 desktop.example.com systemd[1]: sshd.service: control process exited, code=exited status=1
Dec 01 14:04:38 desktop.example.com systemd[1]: Failed to start OpenSSH server daemon.

Environment

  • Prior to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4
