mounting filesystem results in "can't rename /etc/mtab.tmp to /etc/mtab: No such file or directory"

Issue

  • Attempting to mount a filesystem produces "can't rename /etc/mtab.tmp to /etc/mtab: No such file or directory"
  • /etc/mtab shows filesystems mounted that are not actually mounted
  • # df shows filesystems mounted, but they are not OR # df shows filesystems unmounted, but they are mounted
