Solution Unverified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.x
  • Red Hat Satellite-5.x

Issue

  • How to configure unattended provisioning of a system from Red Hat Satellite 5.x when it has a grub2 password?
  • Re-Provisioning of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.x halts and ask for usename & password if grub2 password was configured on the client.

Resolution

  • Before re-provisioning the system, run the below two commands as a remote command on the client system, this commands will remove password-protect from boot menu. Rebuilding the /boot/grub2/grub.cfg file via grub2-mkconfig has different syntax for BIOS vs UEFI based machines.

    • BIOS-based machines:

      rm /etc/grub.d/01_users
      grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

    • UEFI-based machines:

      rm /etc/grub.d/01_users
      grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/redhat/grub.cfg

  • Once these commands are executed successfully on the client, you can go ahead and re-provision the system.
