Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 with Kernel version 2.6.32-504 or higher kernel panics on attempt to write data to an array with StarTech USB controller card installed

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • After freshly installing or upgrading Red Hat Enterprise Linux to 6.6 with Kernel version 2.6.32-504 or higher, any attempt to write data to an array located on either of the 2 x LSI 9271-8i HBA cards results in a kernel panic. Anything in excess of about 50GB seems to trigger it. Older Kernels such as 2.6.32-431 do not exhibit this behavior.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
    • kernel-2.6.32-504.el6 or later
  • StarTech 4 Port USB 3.0 PCI Express PCIe Controller Card
    • This card is known to cause the issue
