Server won't start after logical volume delete

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • On production system : removed the logical volume, volume group, physical volume, and deleted the partitions. Rebooted this system and it fails to the root user command line (if one hits CTRL-D). It won't start. It complains about not being able to run fsck on the volume group that is deleted. Also, it does not seem to be making accessible all of the data on the server, e.g. "/var/log" is missing, though "/var" is there. Also, LVM commands like "lvs" fail.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.4
  • Logical Volume Manager (LVM) 2
