iSCSI performance issue with Intel 82599EB nic and ixgbe driver

Issue

  • noticed that read performance to iSCSI storage array is poor
  • especially noticable with increasing read request sizes
  • when compared to 82598 model NIC, performance is ~8x slower than on 82599

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • ixgbe driver and Intel 82599EB NIC
