RHEL VM under Vmware becomes unresponsive while hot adding memory

Issue

  • While hot adding memory to an Red Hat Enterprise Linuxn guest running under VMware by following instructions available at http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-10492 , it becomes unresponsive.
  • After changing the memory allocation at VMware side, below message is displayed in the client.

    VMCIUtil: Updating context id from 0xffffffff to 0xbb829090 on event 0. 
    Hotplug Mem Device 
    System RAM resource 7d000000 - 87ffffff cannot be added 
    ACPI: add_memory failed 
    ACPI: Cannot enable memory device 
    Hotplug Mem Device 
    Hotplug Mem Device 
    
  • After running the online_hotplug_memory.sh in the guest to recognize the newly added memory, system becomes unresponsive. Almost all commands hang though some command works, ping works, cannot login to console or via ssh. Below message is displayed on the console at this stage.

    nommu_map_sg: overflow 137c2e2000+4096 of device mask ffffffff
