RHEL5.11: Problems with Linux NFS4 client and NetApp NFS4 server version cDOT 8.3.2P1 when using NFSv4 delegations

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

On netapp, the activity on nfs clients can do an outage of opened file descriptors that was linked to nfsV4 delegation (case opened on netapp side)

The tests performed:
- The same issue does not appear with redhat 6 client
- The issue disappear if we remove delegation management from netapp side
- No issue on nfsv3

When the problem occurs :
- First the max open file descriptor is reach on netapp: no more can be opened
- Client then cannot access anymore to the files on all shares on this netapp

NFSv4 was implemented recently and we didn’t have this error at the beginning. But we don’t know if we were close to the limit and now we reach it or if it’s a new issue.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.11 (NFS client)
    • kernel-2.6.18-407.el5
    • nfs-utils-1.0.9-71.el5_11
  • NetApp (NFS server)
    • cDOT 8.3.2P1
  • NFS4 with delegations enabled
