What does the message "Totem is unable to form a cluster because of an operating system or network fault. " mean?

Issue

  • Cluster is reporting in logs messages like below:
Oct 20 01:29:12 node42 corosync[217177]: [TOTEM ] The network interface is down.
[....]
Oct 20 01:29:23 node42 corosync[217177]: [MAIN  ] Totem is unable to form a cluster because of an operating system or network fault (reason: totem is continuously in gather state). The most common cause of this message is that the local firewall is configured improperly.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, 8 with High-Availability or Resilient Storage Add-on
  • corosync-1.4.1-4.el6 or newer
