JON Agent is being reported as unavailable due to "not-null property references a null or transient value: org.rhq.core.domain.measurement.Availability.resource"

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • JBoss Operations Network (JON) 2.2.0

Issue

  • Agents that are up and available are reported as down resources within the GUI
  • Server log contains the following message:
INFO [org.rhq.enterprise.server.discovery.DiscoveryServerServiceImpl] Error processing availability report from [agenthost.myhost.com]: javax.ejb.EJBException:javax.persistence.PersistenceException: org.hibernate.PropertyValueException: not-null property references a null or transient value: org.rhq.core.domain.measurement.Availability.resource -> javax.persistence.PersistenceException:org.hibernate.PropertyValueException: not-null property references a null or transient value: org.rhq.core.domain.measurement.Availability.resource -> org.hibernate.PropertyValueException:not-null property references a null or transient value: org.rhq.core.domain.measurement.Availability.resource

Resolution

This issue has been identified as [1](RHQ-327) PropertyValueException when merging availability report - makes resources go red or grey.   One of the following workarounds may apply:

  • Restart the agent(s) that are showing as unavailable
  • Restart the agent(s) with the -u command-line option to force the agent(s) to purge its persistent inventory and re-sync with the server

Root Cause

Agent agenthost.myhost.com is producing a bad availability report.  The agent's inventory is not in-sync with the server's inventory.  Possibly a resource has been deleted on the server but the agent still thinks it is alive and being monitored.

Diagnostic Steps

  • Invoke the Execute Availability Reports action on the agent to see what the report looks like
