What would the requirement be for kdump disk storage

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

  • Total physical memory is 16 GB,32GB and 128GB

Issue

  • What would the requirement be for kdump storage?  Total physical memory is 16 GB.

Resolution

  • To  be safe 16GB
  • If you test and find this to much you may want to reduce it
  • The target storage should be greater than the physical memory, otherwise it will put a warning:
Warning: There is not enough space to save a vmcore.
The size of /dev/sda1 should be much greater than 889676 kilo bytes.
  • When you want to increase the physical memory, you should increase the used target storage or use a new
storage large enough for the kdump. Or you can choose the kdump filter to collect less pages of the memory to
    decrease the vmcore size.
