Problem with dual display, with Intel i915 driver giving kernel errors in Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The DVI monitor functions correctly, however no signal comes through on the VGA KVM monitor.
  • On changing KVM inputs (pressing another workstation) and then pressing "Auto" get display output.
  • The KVM monitor then loses signal and goes black.
  • For the Auto moment the VGA monitor works, and following error messages are logged in
    /var/log/messages and dmesg saying:
[drm:pch_irq_handler] *ERROR* PCH poison interrupt

Environment

On a RHEL 6.3 workstation. The overall setup is
- Intel i7 2600k (Intel onboard graphics 3000 i915)
- Acme SMK980 kvm monitor (plugged into VGA port)
- External 19" Dell monitor (plugged into DVI port)
- Tested on 2.6.32-279.5.2.el6.x86_64 and 2.6.32-279.11.1.el6.x86_64
