Unable to change password as a user or delete the file opasswd

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The opasswd file is corrupted
  • I cannot purge/delete the opasswd file from the server
  • I can not change the password via passwd command as a normal user

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • pam_pwhistory or pam_unix
