After hot-adding memory to RHEL 5 VMware guest, the memory does not increase

Issue

• After hot-adding memory to a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 virtual machine, the VMware host shows the change but the guest does not show the increase.
• The following command shows memory is all onlined

# grep line /sys/devices/system/memory/*/state

• Example:

# grep line /sys/devices/system/memory/*/state
/sys/devices/system/memory/memory0/state:online
/sys/devices/system/memory/memory10/state:online
/sys/devices/system/memory/memory11/state:online
