The /var/log/tomcat6/catalina.out file from tomcat6 package fails rpm verification with rpm -V

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After installing the tomcat6 package and then starting the tomcat6 service, /var/log/tomcat6/catalina.out gets flagged by rpm -Va as having a bad size, checksum, and timestamp. This is problematic for systems that must follow the RHEL6 STIG. Ref: V-38447.

  • When running the rpm -V tomcat6 command, the output shows a content issue with /var/log/tomcat6/catalina.out. As catalina.out is a log file, it is incorrect behavior to have it flagged with verify.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
    • tomcat6 package
