Files with non-ascii characters in their name are not listed correctly under Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • A file generated with a non-ASCII character in its name does not appear with the same character in the output of ls, for example:

    # touch şiçi.txt
    # ls
    Desktop ?i?i.txt

  • ls prints question marks for characters it does not consider printable.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux, all versions
  • File names containing characters outside the ASCII character set, for example accented characters or characters from a non-Latin script.
