Issue

  • System hangs while booting with below messages printed to the console:
Starting udev: /sbin/start_udev[60]: not found [No such file or directory]
/sbin/start_udev[60]: -: not found [No such file or directory]
<repeated multiple times>
/sbin/start_udev: line 93: pushd: not found
cp: cannot copy a directory, 'dev', into itself, '/dev/dev/'

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8
  • /bin/sh symlink is changed to point to /bin/ksh:
# ls -l /bin/sh
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 4 Sep  8 04:31 /bin/sh -> ksh
