non-root user cannot change Samba password when system is authenticating against AD using winbind

Issue

When System is authenticating to Windows 2008 AD using winbind , local system users are unable to change their samba password. The error reported is below:

$ smbpasswd
Old SMB password:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Could not connect to machine 127.0.0.1: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
Failed to change password for user1

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3
  • samba-common-3.0.33-3.7.el5-x86_64
  • Windows 2008 Domain Controller
