System clock runs too fast on HP ProLiant hardware with RHEL 5

Issue

  • On certain HP ProLiant hardware under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 for AMD64/EM64T, the system clock is too fast (approximately two to four times as fast as it should be). The time drift is too big to be corrected by NTP.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 prior to 5.4
  • HP ProLiant hardware
