Why communication over a VLAN tagged bond interface fails ?

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • If VLAN is configured on a physical interface then communication with other hosts on same network works fine, if same IP is configured in VLAN interface configured over bond interface then communication breaks.
  • When source system is sending the ICMP ping request packets to destination it is properly getting sent with VLAN tag . But when that packets are reaching the destination system the VLAN tag is not seen on those packets.
  • Similar issue of VLAN tag is not happening when VLAN is configured directly on physical interface.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.7
  • kernel-2.6.32-573.3.1.el6
  • bonding
  • vlan
