How to Enable Dynamic DNS for Red Hat Enterprise Linux Virtual Machines in Microsoft Azure

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Unlike Windows VM clients, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) VM clients do not automatically register with a Dynamic DNS (DDNS) server. RHEL uses an open source ISC DHCP server for IP allocation. The ISC DHCP server can register client IPs with DDNS servers on behalf of clients. Unfortunately, ISC DHCP servers are currently not available in Microsoft Azure.
  • Azure DHCP servers do not have the ability or the authorization to register dynamic records in a DNS server. This results in Azure RHEL VM clients being unable to register with a Microsoft Active Directory Domain Service.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.7 and later
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1 and later
  • Microsoft Azure cloud platform
  • Active Directory server supporting dynamic updates (accepts secure and insecure updates)
