dmidecode is not working - /dev/mem: Permission denied

Issue

  • dmidecode or other commands which require access to /dev/mem fail even for the root user
# dmidecode 
  # dmidecode 2.11
  /dev/mem: Permission denied
  • This is expected for non root users but root should be able to run dmidecode

Environment

  • Observed on RHEL 5.7
  • Observed on dmidecode-2.12-1.el5
    • This issue is not dependent on the kernel or dmidecode version
  • Security software and libraries are installed: in this situation CA Technologies AccessControl (seos)
