  • In rescue mode with install media of RHEL5.7 or later, mkswap fails with bigger than 2GB size partition.
# mkswap /dev/sda2
mkswap: warning: truncating swap area to 2097144kB
Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 2147471360 bytes

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
    • RHEL5.7 or later
    • Install media (Installation/rescue mode)

Note: RHEL Installer in RHEL6.x media takes different approach. So this issue doesn't happen on RHEL6.
