How to Re-connect to a Database on connection loss using org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource?

Issue

Datasource connection lost
At nights our database team make an online backup that apparently makes the fuse to disconnect from the database for a moment
Usually the datasource reconnect itself to Ingres, but not always and that's our issue
I would like to know where and how I have to configure to make sure the datasource can reconnect after database failures or offline periods of time
