In RHEL7.1 when reading from striped LVM volume is affecting overall XFS AND EXT4 performance built on top of LVM volume

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After upgrading our system from RHEL 6.2 to RHEL 7.1 , system performance is badly impacted. After the upgrade we started noticing high IO wait through top and system throughput was inconsistent. Having both systems side by side it's easy to notice that the updated system (RHEL 7.1) is generating more Write commands per second through iostat. We would like to investigate what's causing the fragmentation on Write IO's.

  • On RHEL7 system, significant performance regression specifically when reading data from the XFS file system is observed.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
