unable to add nodes to an OpenShift 3 environment: Cannot link, file exists at destination

Issue

After adding nodes to the ansible hosts file and running the playbook it fails with error:

failed: [master1.example.com] => ... 'master.server.crt']) => {"dest": "/etc/origin/generated-configs/master-master2.example.com/master.server.crt", "failed": true, ...
  msg: Cannot link, file exists at destination
