After updating to 2.6.18-398.el5PAE significant number of OOM-kill events

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • After upgrading from kernel-2.6.18-371.el5PAE to kernel-2.6.18-398.el5PAE we noticed significant number OOM killer events and system reboot which was attributed to the size of LowMem
  • From the oom-killer output we see there is plenty of free memory on the server; however low memory is below the min watermark
Jan 10 10:00:43 vm-asu9 kernel: Normal free:3384kB min:3432kB <=========== free < min in lowmem
Jan 10 10:00:43 vm-asu9 kernel: lowmem_reserve[]: 0 0 0 77824
Jan 10 10:00:43 vm-asu9 kernel: HighMem free:3843204kB min:512kB <===== plenty of free Highmem
Jan 10 10:00:43 vm-asu9 kernel: lowmem_reserve[]: 0 0 0 0

Environment

  • Physical IBM Blade
  • RHEL 5
  • kernel-2.6.18-398.el5PAE
  • Note: this is not unique to specific kernel or hardware version . The only condition is that a PAE kernel is running.
