Why "Ifconfig" and "ip link show" command output format changed for vlan devices in RHEL 6.7
Issue
- When we upgrade the OS of our product from RHEL 6.6 to 6.7, we realized that some commands give different outputs for the releases
such asifconfig,ip link showetc. The sample outputs are as below:
With RHEL6.7 kernel version:
$ cat uname
Linux trhtlangley51 2.6.32-573.8.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Sep 25 19:24:22 EDT 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
4: bond0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,MASTER,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state UP
link/ether 52:54:00:3e:7a:7a brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
5: bond0.381@bond0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state UP
link/ether 52:54:00:3e:7a:7a brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
With RHEL6.6 kernel version:
$ cat uname
Linux trsbrms18 2.6.32-504.8.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Dec 19 12:09:25 EST 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
4: bond0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,MASTER,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state UP
link/ether 52:54:00:6f:71:64 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
5: bond0.926@bond0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,MASTER,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state UP
link/ether 52:54:00:6f:71:64 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
- The difference is the
MASTERtag being displayed forvlaninterface in RHEL6.6 kernel while no more seen with RHEL6.7 kernel version. - Due the differences some of our dependent monitoring scripts which relies on the this output tend to fail intermittently triggering false alarms.
- What was changed in the latest RHEL6.7 release which caused the outputs for the commands to differ?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.7.
- Interface/networking command outputs.
