Why do we see large number of "FD filter programming failed due to incorrect filter parameters" error messages with i40e driver in RHEL7.2?

Issue

  • We use a Intel NIC Type X710 with rhel provided drivers i40 with a 10G Interface and an active bonding configuration. We tried to use bonding mode 0 and 5 which both gives us this flood of error messages.

  • We are facing a heavy number of the following message:

  • We are currently observing something we can't explain on multiple RHEL 7.2 servers - all HPE ProLiant DL380G9. Multiple times per minute, we can see messages like the following in the /var/log/messages file:
[494735.312825] i40e 0000:82:00.1: FD filter programming failed due to incorrect filter parameters

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.2
  • Intel NIC X710 NICs.
  • i40e driver.
