"An error occurred and your satellite configuration changes could not be stored." error when changing settings in Satellite web UI

Issue

  • unable to change HTTP Proxy information from the Satellite webUI. The following error message is encountered:

    "An error occurred and your satellite configuration changes could not be stored. Please contact support for more information."
    
  • uploading a new Satellite certificate into the web UI does not work
  • error in /var/log/messages:
    sudo: tomcat : sorry, you must have a tty to run sudo ; TTY=unknown ; PWD=/usr/share/tomcat5 ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/rhn-satellite-activate --rhn-cert /usr/share/tomcat5/temp/XXXX --disconnected
    
  • error in /var/log/tomcat5/catalina.out:

    ERROR com.redhat.rhn.manager.satellite.SystemCommandExecutor - Error encountered executing (args=[/usr/bin/sudo, /usr/bin/rhn-config-satellite.pl, --target=/etc/rhn/rhn.conf,
    --option=server.satellite.http_proxy_password=XXXXX, 2>&1, >, /dev/null])
    ERROR com.redhat.rhn.manager.satellite.SystemCommandExecutor - Error message from process: sudo: sorry, you must have a tty to run sudo
