Unable to deactivate volume group : open count remains 1 even after unmount in RHEL 5

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Unable to deactivate volume group . The logical volumes has been unmounted however when trying to deactivate command fails with error message:
[root@host ~]# vgchange -an vg01 
Can't deactivate volume group "vg01" with 1 open logical volume(s) 

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
  • lvm2
  • /proc/mdstat shows the device in question as a spare or active device in a raid device
    • Other environments having these symptoms but that do not match this condition may be susceptible to a similar problem
