Why does installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1 fail with error PXE-E51 No DHCP or proxyDHCP offers were received ?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1

Issue

  • Installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1 fails with the errors below.
PXE-E51: No DHCP or proxyDHCP offers were received
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM
Operating system not found
  • Installing using the source DVDs of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1

Resolution

  • Download the BINARY DVD iso , not the source ISOs.
  • Also make sure to change the Boot priority of the system from Network to DVD Media.
  • If doing PXE installation confirm client system is able to reach dhcp server. When dhcpd service is configured with multiple subnets it either need ethernets with ipaddress in range of subnet defined in dhcpd or it is also possible to configure dhcp relay to forward dhcp request so dhcpd running in different subnet can listen that.

Root Cause

  • The downloaded DVDs were incorrect.
  • The client is not able to reach dhcp server to get ipaddress and do PXE boot.
