kdump does not start on RHEL 5 when ext4 is used as a dump target

Issue

  • kdump does not start during boot or when using service kdump start on RHEL 5, when using ext4 file systems as a dump target. Instead, the following type of errors are seen:
# service kdump start
No kdump initial ramdisk found.                            [WARNING]
Rebuilding /boot/initrd-2.6.18-308.13.1.el5kdump.img
mount: /dev/hda1 already mounted or /tmp/tmp.CQBbIv6131 busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/hda1 is mounted on /var/crash
/etc/kdump.conf: Bad mount point /dev/hda1
Failed to run mkdumprd
