Certain commands return special or weird characters in the output in RHEL

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Certain commands return special or weird characters in the output.

    [root@test perform]# rm subscript*
rm: remove regular file âsubscription-manager-1.11.3-14.el5_11.x86_64.rpmâ? y

The special characters are only in the output and don't appear to hinder the command, but they're misleading when expecting output.

  • Some characters appear to be remapped in RHEL 7. I am seeing a single quote being replaced by a capital a with an umlaut above it, sometimes followed by the cent character. I am seeing this whether using VT100, xterm or screen, and with any shell I try. I am seeing this in RHEL 7.2, but not in any previous (4,5,6) versions of Red Hat. It almost seems like that ASCII character has been remapped or something in RHEL 7. For example, using RHEL 6.7:

    # ln /infra/opt /tmp/test
ln: `/infra/opt': hard link not allowed for directory

    but in RHEL 7.2:

    # ln /infra/opt /tmp/test
ln: ânfra/optâhard link not allowed for directory

  • The RHEL 7 "file not found" error message seems to be using a hi-bit version of single quotes.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
