Attempting to lvremove an LVM snapshot of the root filesystem stalls any access to the root filesystem

Issue

  • Server is unresponsive after starting "lvremove" to remove a snapshot of the LV under the root filesystem. "lvremove" does not complete.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
    • lvm2 prior to lvm2-2.02.118-3.el6_7.4
    • device-mapper prior to device-mapper-1.02.95-3.el6_7.4
    • originally seen with 2.02.118 versions of lvm2/lvm2-libs packages
