Why is the number of the characters per line in the parameter file used for RHEL7 installation limited to 80 characters?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • In the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 installation on zVM, the parameter file like generic.prm has a limitation of 80 characters per line.
  • But, in some cases, we want to write a long boot parameter in one line. Especially the new ip= boot parameter with a long FQDN as hostname can hit the limitation easily.
  • Why is it limited to 80 lengths per line.
  • How can we overcome the limitation?
