Performance issues after some uptime under constant workload

Solution Verified - Updated -

Under heavy (constant) workload, it is observed that the performance of the machine decreases. Usually some critical threshold can be found where the performance decrease is noticeable.

  • RHEL5 or older

  • large memory system (depends on workload and hardware specifications, usually unlikely bellow some 50G of installed memory, on modern hardware); note that one can reproduce this on a system with just 2G of memory, but only under massive and obvious memory pressure.

  • constant, memory intensive, workload (like heavily used oracle) and uptime (it can take even days to get to this condition)
