Unable to scale a PDF document to fit the page in RHEL

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The command "lpr -o fit-to-page <pdf filename>" does not honour the fit-to-page option. Attempting to print a PDF document that is exactly A4-sized results in the last line being cut off. On the other hand, when I convert the PDF document to PostScript using pdftops (as in "pdftops <pdf filename> - | lpr" the output fits on the page, but it scales down the output more than necessary.
  • Printing a PDF document with the "fit-to-page" option may result in a document with cropped edges.
  • We are trying to print a PDF from the command line that has very narrow margins so the edges get cut off. We try to specify the fit-to-page option, but it seems to be ignored so we get the same page output every time.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 & 6
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.3.7 & 1.4.2
