syslog.conf authpriv default is /var/adm/authlog but /var/adm does not exist

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The default syslog.conf in RHEL 5, up to and including 5.8, has authpriv.info set to log to /var/adm/authlog; however, /var/adm does not exist by default on Linux systems (it is from Solaris et al.). Thus, login information does not get logged at all until somebody notices and fixes this, system by system.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • sysklogd
