System will not boot past single user mode

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • System will not boot past single user mode

  • Attempting to boot results in the following:

Telling INIT to go to single user mode.
INIT: Going single user
INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal
INIT: Sending processes the KILL signal
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue): 
  • System receives TERM and KILL signals and hangs on Shutting down loopback interface...

  • /var/log/messages shows messages like the following and everything exits:

Aug 15 19:44:01 rhelhost auditd[19175]: The audit daemon is now changing the system to single user mode
Aug 15 19:44:01 rhelhost init: Switching to runlevel: 1
Aug 15 19:44:15 rhelhost nmbd[15236]:   Got SIGTERM: going down... 
Aug 15 19:44:18 rhelhost pcscd: pcscdaemon.c:572:signal_trap() Preparing for suicide
Aug 15 19:44:21 rhelhost exiting on signal 15
