Gnome login problem - GDM could not write to your authorization file

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After system login, below message is displayed on the screen:

    GDM could not write to your authorization file. This could mean that you are out of space or that your home directory could not be opened for writing. In any case, it is not possible to login. Please contact your system administrator."
    
  • After login into the system, getting following error messages in pop-up windows:

    GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details -  1: Failed to convert IOR '' to an object reference 2: Failed to convert IOR '' to an object reference)
    
    An error occured while loading or saving configuration information for gnome-session. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.

  • Getting following error in /var/log/messages:

    Dec  1 10:07:13  gconfd (root-xxxx): starting (version 2.14.0), pid 8391 user 'root'
    Dec  1 10:07:13  gconfd (root-xxxx): Bad permissions 777 on directory /tmp/gconfd-root
    Dec  1 10:07:13  gconfd (root-xxxx): Failed to get lock for daemon, exiting: Directory /tmp/gconfd-root has a problem, gconfd can't use it.
