Netfs will unmount NFS partitions leaving orphaned loopback devices when mounting /dev/loop devices over iSCSI

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When unmounting NFS partitions by stopping the netfs service loopback devices will not be deleted. This will result in a hang when rebooting the machine on a default setup.
  • When using Eucalyptus, shutdown of the machine fails. See Eucalyptus bug 3183

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3
  • LVM or other command that issues IO to all known devices during shutdown
    • NOTE: For LVM, this means /etc/lvm/lvm.conf contains a default filter line (filter = [ "a/.*/" ]) or a filter line that scans /dev/loop* devices
  • This problem has been seen when using Eucalyptus
