zSeries Disk Formatting issues on kickstart with RHEL 6

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • Previously, users have never had to define the VOLSER variable from the Linux guest when using RHEL4 or RHEL5. Installation is completely automated using a kickstart server and trying to label each dasd uniquely during the kickstart would be risky at best. If one disk was accidentally mis-labeled it could crash another guest. This has previously been set outside of the Guest Operating System.

  • When installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, the installer does not see the VOLSER when using the -k option.

Environment

  • zSeries IBM Hardware as virtualization host
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 installation
