Machine becomes unresponsive when using network-based filesystems such as CIFS or NFS when filesystems are under very heavy load.

Issue

  • The machine will periodically become unresponsive when issuing large amounts of traffic across a network-based filesystem. Hung task call traces will begin to appear in /var/log/messages due to unresponsive processes.

  • In addition to the above network-based filesystem connections will begin to timeout:

nfs: server hostname not responding, still trying
CIFS VFS: Server 192.168.166.210 has not responded in 300 seconds. Reconnecting...
