Why does my kernel panic on next_thread in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4

Issue

  • My server crashed
  • A vmcore was created
  • The crash message is "Kernel BUG at exit.c:904"
  • The call trace shows "sys_times" in backtrace.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 - All Architectures
  • kernel 2.6.9-67.0.18.EL through 2.6.9-78.0.10.EL
