gpxe insufficient retry timeout.

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Booting within KVM over gpxe is unreliable due to gpxe retry time out.
  • This means sometimes it works, sometimes it does not find dhcp and pxe servers.
  • For gpxe, wireshark shows DHCPDISCOVER at 0,1,11 seconds (it seems gpxe messes up some packets on T7400 as the console show some transmit timeouts +
Link is down + Link is up during dhcp negotiation...)
  • Wiresharking bare metal PXEs show these retries at seconds 0,4,12,28,60 for Dell T3500, HP xw8400. For Ultra20 it even send DHCPDISCOVER at 0,2,6.14.30,62,126 seconds.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • qemu-kvm
  • gpxe
