How do I turn off the Red Hat Alert Icon in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.x on the gnome desktop?

To disable "Red Hat Alert Icon" that shows up on the upper right corner of the gnome desktop globally follow the steps below

  1. Login as 'root' user

  2. Open the file "/usr/share/gnome/default.session" with your favourite text editor.

  3. Comment out the line below
                    4,RestartCommand=rhn-applet-gui --sm-client-id default4
    to reflect as shown below
            #4,RestartCommand=rhn-applet-gui --sm-client-id default4    ( NOTE: Add the '#' to comment out this line )

  4. Save the file.

  5. Log out then log back in.
