Why do I get Error 121: "The semaphore timeout period has expired" (ERROR_SEM_TIMEOUT) when I log in via ssh

Issue

  • When Windows users log in to RHEL via ssh though putty, the following error is returned and no connection is made:
Error 121: "The semaphore timeout period has expired" (ERROR_SEM_TIMEOUT)

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Windows Vista using ssh/putty
