CUPS in RHEL is unable to communicate with printer

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When we send a file to a printer, it just sits in the queue. I have increased the logging level. I am conercned about the following line:

    prnt/backend/hp.c 746: INFO: open device failed stat=12: hp:/net/HP_LaserJet?ip=10.1.2.3; will retry in 30 seconds...
    
  • We can see many connection error for print queue:

    D [01/Jul/2015:16:26:20 +0100] [Job 1] Connection error: Connection timed out
    D [01/Jul/2015:16:26:20 +0100] [Job 1] Connection error: Connection timed out
    
  • The following status is returned by the "lpstat -p" command:

    printer pr1 now printing pr1-97824.  enabled since Tue 15 May 2018 10:10:55 AM EDT
            The printer is not responding.
    printer pr33 now printing pr33-99134.  enabled since Tue 15 May 2018 12:03:25 PM EDT
            The printer is not responding.
    
  • The following status is returned by the "lpstat -p" command:

    printer pr34 now printing pr34-23148.  enabled since Wed 16 Oct 2019 03:17:24 PM EDT
            The printer is unreachable at this time.
    printer lp3947 now printing lp3947-23835.  enabled since Wed 16 Oct 2019 02:56:51 PM EDT
            The printer is unreachable at this time.
